 31 Days Of Psychedelic Drawings

In November of 2020 I began “A Psychedelic Drawing A Day". I had been posting a drawing a day throughout the entire month of October for “Inktober” and decided to keep going through November, but on Day 10, I ran out of steam. On 2/8/21, I once again continued the effort of posting a new psychedelic drawing every day on my Instagram. On March 2, 2021, Day 31 was completed.

All 31 of the original Psychedelic Drawings that did not sell the day of posting are now available for purchase here for $100.

50% of all sales will go to the psychedelic research nonprofit
Unlimited Sciences for their continued efforts in connecting research and development in the medicinal benefits of psilocybin in our society. ⁣

"Phazed" was originally inspired from The Dark Crystal, but it turned into something completely different very quickly. I listened to Sun Ra Arkestra's new album "Swirling" while drawing it... travelling through the spaceways definitely inspired this piece.

I'd be remiss if I didn't say this drawing had heavy @hauntedhorfee influences. I played into the thick/thin expression of the pocket brush. I wanted the image to feel familiar yet completely alien at the same time. I don't think I accomplished that as well as Antwan Horfee, but I love this drawing all the same!⁣

Day 11

Disassembly Required
$100.00

7.5x10” blue ballpoint pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 11 of “31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings”

I fell back in love with using a ballpoint pen to draw. I love the delicate degrees of lines and shading that can be achieved and the blue ink is a welcome change from all of the black ink I have been using lately. “Disassembly Required” is about losing one’s “self” and breaking free of the constructs that may define your life. Sometimes a new perspective requires dismantling your ego so you can put yourself back together with a stronger and more positive and healthy outlook on life.

Day 12

Composing A Moment Of Nature
$100.00

7.5x10” blue ballpoint pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 12 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings

Composing a Moment of Nature is about accessing your experiences in nature through your mind’s eye. Living in the Pacific Northwest I am very lucky to have the ability to explore an incredible amount of nature not far from my doorstep, but there are still plenty of times I wish I could be out in nature and I cannot. For those moments I close my eyes and compose a moment of nature in my mind’s eye. Just like the wise words of ancient grandmothers, the sounds and sites of nature are forever traveling with us in our hearts.

Day 13

An Island Between Worlds
$100.00

7.5x10” blue ballpoint pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 13 of “31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings”

The multi-worlds theory continues to invade our popular culture. While the idea that our universe is but one of many universes throughout space and time is currently impossible to prove and hard to believe, through stories of science fiction, we can begin to understand notions of physics that seem beyond our realm of possibility. A clinical use of psychedelics can also help to remove the veil of constructs and illusions that limit us and impede our understanding of the very world(s) around us. Some believe there is another plane of existence your consciousness can visit. It is this place that I believe, “An Island Between Worlds” lives.

Day 14

Say Anything
$100.00

7.5x10” blue ballpoint pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 14 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings

I started implementing some colored inks these ballpoint drawings. My preferred weapons of choice lately have been the blue and red ink Bic roundstics, however I used some brighter colored gel roller pens into this drawing as well. "Say Anything" is definitely the drawing that would end up in my AP Chemistry notebook in high school where all those important notes should have been. This is a perfect example of improvisational drawing, words, thoughts, memories pouring out, saying everything and nothing.

Day 15

Lizard Wizard
$100.00

7.5x10” gel roller pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 15 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings

Today's drawing tools transitioned from blue ballpoint to colored gel pens. The gel pens don't have the expression that ballpoint can, but a clean gel line can be just as delicate and inviting. I had this idea of what a drawing in one color would look on top of a drawing in another, so I started in gold and finished in green. "Wizard Lizard" gives a nod towards one of my all time favorite psychedelic rock bands, the prolific, highly creative and no doubt psychedelic, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. These Aussie rockers have taken over the world in recent years and I can't wait to see them for the tenth time once the world opens back up! Definitely give them a listen of you haven't.

Day 16

Decomposition of Rat Fink
$100.00

7.5x10” ballpoint pen on 120# OhuhuDay

16 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings

In 1987 a lot of amazing things happened for me in 4th grade. For one, I could beat everyone in my class at arm wrestling (beating a large group of people at arm wrestling will never happen again in my life), I kept winning Spelling Bees and getting rewarded with Butterfingers and my friend Ernie Bock introduced me to Rat Fink and the art of Ed Roth. Rat Fink was conceived as an anti-hero to mickey mouse, and was one of the ugliest and meanest looking cartoons I had ever seen at the time. Rat Fink was the first cartoon that made me realize not everything has to be perfect and pretty.

This drawing is what would happen if Rat Fink was a landscape and not a bulging eyed rat driving a hot rod. Maybe this scene is not the Pacific Northwest, but really another planet made entirely out of Rat Fink? I’m not sure what is exactly going on here and that is the definite beauty of allowing the subconscious to flow!

Day 17

Temporal Traveler
$100.00

7.5x10” ballpoint pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 17 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings

I think a little bit of both Frank Herbert and Douglas Adams influenced this drawing. Today’s drawing is all about flying time traveling whales.

Day 18

Guardian Incognito
$100.00

6x10” ballpoint pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 18 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings

As the slow rapidly melts in Portland it sounds like our house is going to collapse from the bombardment of tons ice melting off the trees. As Portland waits for this day of rapid thaw, my thoughts turn to summer, but then memories of being held up in our house due to extreme poor air quality and half ov Oregon burning made me wonder what season I even pine for anymore. Its these dire moments that we turn to mystical heroes for courage and affirmation that things will be okay.

Through my days traveling the country painting live music, many an owl would randomly show up in the paintings. A good friend of ours once told us that owls represent guardians and that made a lot of sense to me. Over the years I have considered the owl as mystical guardian and gatekeeper of mysteries and other worlds. I once had a crazy experience with a giant snowy owl that landed in my path and would not leave until we stared into each other eyes long enough for her to give me the download.

“Guardian Incognito” is about our hidden “guardians” among us. The voice in the wind, our ancestral sentinels, the secret magic in the periphery of our subconscious that gives us courage, strength and inspiration.

Day 19

Red vs. Blue
$100.00

6.25x10” ballpoint pen on 120# Ohuhu

Day 19 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings

I had a lot of fun switching between red and blue as I drew this one. Each layer of one color helped inform what the next layer would do. Complete improvisation, but I used a lot of simple drawing elements to try to construct the drawing... lots of clouds, waterfalls, wings and flames ect. My favorite part is the offset "3D" style in parts of it and I will definitely be experimenting with more of that in future drawings.

Day 20

Canopy
$100.00

7.5x10” ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

The beginning of this drawing was created during the Kratom episode of Hamilton’s Pharmacopia, “Canopy” is all about the mystical connections of mother nature, plants and growth with the “humanoid” connection. How we imprint our culture into the forest and how it imprints into us. From Sasquatches to Fairy Rings humanoids have informed us about the perils of of losing disconnect with nature. Nature’s Canopy is thinning and soon the protection we once adored, but now have forgotten, will soon be nothing more than a forgotten song lost the wind, ancient and unknowable.

Day 21

Reef Or Madness
$100.00

6.5x6.5" gel pen on 120# Ohuhu⁣

I used two different color gel pens on this one. The scanner had a bit of trouble with the fluorescent orange, so know that this is way more fluorescent than it looks. ⁣

Day 22

Cosmic Carrier
$100.00

7x10” ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

Today’s drawing is real fresh, my hand still has a cramp from drawing it. Sorry for the late post today, hopefully tomorrows Psychedelic drawing will come a little quicker. “Cosmic Carrier” is a nod to the most popular of the creation myths, “Turtle Island” or the “World Turtle”. It is a story of how when the world was all water, it was a giant turtle that carried all the land, flora and fauna on it’s back. I’ve always loved that idea of the majestic turtle. My wife pointed out it definitely has Morla, The Ancient One, vibes from The Never Ending Story.

Day 23

Steel Your Head
$100.00

6.5x8.5" ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

Day 23 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings! ⁣⁣

Today's drawing is a little tribute to the PNW and "Oncorhynchus mykiss", the beautiful steelhead or rainbow trout.

Day 24

The Lore Of Odin
$100.00

7x9” ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

Day 24 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings! ⁣

"The Lore Of Odin" was completely improvised. I started creating marks in different areas of the paper and then slowly connected them inspiring imagery. A man and a woman showed up in the drawing and I believe it may be the Norse God, Odin and his wife Frigg. There was no preconceived imagery going into this drawing and they are always the hardest to understand what my subconscious was trying to say. I was watching American Gods when I was drawing this, so there's that.

Day 25

I'm Still Here
$100.00

7x8.5” ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

Day 25 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings! ⁣

"I'm Still Here" is just to remind us that the fight for survival of the Orangutan is not over. According to Oangutan.com there are only 55,000-65,000 Oangutans left in the wild. While the Borneo Orangutan population has seen a bit of improvement due to conservancy, the two other species of Orangutan found in Sumatra are dwindling. With only 800 Tapanuli Orangutans left in the wild, found only in the 1000 square kilometer area of the North Sumatran province of Tapanuli.

Orangutan.com is a fantastic resource to learn more of the plight of the Orangutan and how you can help keep their incredibly bio-diverse habitat safe from growing human encroachment.

Day 26

Mugatu
$100.00

7x10” ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

Day 26 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings! ⁣

Playing catch up so this is the second post of the day. I've always had an affinity for dragons, especially loong. I decided this particular dragon looked a lot like Mugatu from Zoolander, hence the title.

Day 27

Covet Thy Cone
$100.00

7x8.5” ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu⁣

Day 27 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings! ⁣⁣

I decided to play with offset blue and red ballpoint to create a fake 3D effect. I've been having a lot of fun with ballpoint pens, but I wanted to try a bit of a different style than what I have been doing. My drawing roots are in cartoons so I wanted to have some fun with that. I also didn't want to be too exact to sort of mimick more of a looser "trippy drippy" effect. I'm looking forward to summer and coveting more cones! ⁣

Day 28

The Squirrel
$100.00

7x10" ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

Day 28 of 31 days of Psychedelic Drawings!

On June 29, 1967 at the Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, reknown Jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon speaks into the microphone to introduce his next song. His voluminously low, airy voice booms into the microphone, "The Squirrel"...followed by a quieter and more relaxed, "The Squirrel". There is a pause and then the quartet takes off playing the smoking hot Tad Dameron cover, made famous by Miles Davis in 1951. Dexter Gordon's voice made "The Squirrel" the coolest sounding word in the English language. Immediately squirrels in every city in the world were wearing sunglass and little black turtle necks...smoking cigarettes.

I wish I could cooly introduce this drawing to you with the same effectual voice, "The Squirrel...the squirrel." I worked from the bottom up with this drawing so the squirrel was actually the very last thing I drew. So many places in this drawing to hoard nuts and jump around!

Day 29

Anthropomorphic In Nature
$100.00

7x10" ballpoint on 120# Ohuhu

Day 29 of 31 days of Psychedelic Drawings!

Today’s drawing is a living landscape, quickly evolving from some happy trees to that of a giant anthropomorphic skull. I never know where drawings will go when I put pen to paper without any or many preconceived thoughts in the process. Its a very meditative way of creating and it can unlock imagery that the creator may not have been able to access otherwise. The only preparation going into this kind creative process is practice from previous drawings and the confidence in- as the immortal Bob Ross would put it, “no mistakes, just happy accidents.” A zen application in all facets of life, but a most formidable tool in a creators arsenal. Just like an actor on stage, a visual artist cannot lose control and break from what is at play, they must adapt and follow through with same measure of confidence at the start. For me, improvisational creation is evolution in its purest form.

Day 30

Gamma Knife
$100.00

7x10" ballpoint on bristol⁣

Day 30 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings!⁣

Today's drawing was created while listening to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's Live In San Francisco '16 on vinyl. I listened to each side multiple times. Such a great show! I can't wait until I can see them again live! ⁣

Day 31

Rivers Of Mind
$100.00

6.25x10" pigma micron on bristol

Day 31 of 31 Days of Psychedelic Drawings!

Well, I started this project in November and as life would have it, a drawing a day turned into a drawing when I could. I am really pleased to announce that all 31 Psychedelic Drawings have been officially completed! I really can't thank everyone who has suppoerted this project and purchased drawings. So far we have been able to raise $750 for @UnlimitedSciences! You can see all 31 original drawings on my website as well as purchase the ones that are still available (link in bio).

For today's drawing, being the final drawing of the project, I decided to take a break from ballpoint and use a 005 Pigma Micron. These pens are the ultimate in a silky smooth fine line of luxury and have been my go to for years. The beginning of the drawing started off with definite Pacific Northwest vibes so I decided to listen to all of my @RoseCityBand vinyl while drawing it. There are two time-lapse videos of its making posted in my reels if you haven't seen them yet.
